Riders Subdue Man Accused Of Groping Fellow Passenger On Brooklyn L Train
NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) — Riders on the L train subdued an accused groper on Friday night. Youtube footage shows a woman yelling and bringing the groper to the attention of two other riders.
The two riders wrestled the man down and waited for police to arrive.
New Yorkers told CBS 2’s Amy Dardashtian that the vigilante justice was a breath of fresh air.
“Fantastic, it’s about time New Yorkers got involved. It’s really about time,” said Ingrid Meah.
Onlookers cheered as police arrived and arrested Victor Sigler, 30 of the Bronx, who allegedly grabbed a woman’s buttocks.
The youtube video of the incident has drawn nearly 50,000 hits already. Meah told CBS 2 that subway groping has become far too common.
“The guys have no protection for us anymore, none whatsoever, they go by the way you stand. If you stand by the door they will rock their body on you,” she said.
All of the riders that spoke with CBS 2 said that they had been groped before, or knew someone who had.
“I knew how to handle myself, I jammed him in the stomach with my elbow,” said Meah.
Kristin Comis said that it isn’t just women who are being victimized, she once came forward when a gay couple was being harassed.
“Once they saw me stepping forward everybody else kind of joined in and we forced him off, ” she said.
Riders said that sometimes it only takes one person to make a big difference.
