BRENTWOOD, NY (CBSNewYork) -- A pregnant woman and her 10-month-old daughter remain in the hospital Friday after a serious car accident on the Long Island Expressway.

Police say Jose Escobar was drunk and speeding on Thursday evening when he lost control of his Nissan, which spun off the road, went airborne and crashed into the back of a 7-Eleven, reported WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

"The adult male driver of the vehicle was preparing to exit onto Motor Parkway in Brentwood, when he was unable to negotiate the turn," said Suffolk County Police Spokesperson Ryan Defelippis.

"The vehicle went off the road onto a grassy median, then went airborne and crashed into the back of a 7-Eleven," she told reporters.

During the crash, the child's car seat was thrown from the vehicle, causing her to sustain serious injuries. She was transported to Southside Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

Her mother was also transported to a local hospital and listed in less-than-serious condition.

Escobar, 29, is said to have been unharmed in the accident and has been charged with DWI.
