NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — More than 1,700 miles separate the Tri-State Area from Aurora, Colorado, but there are zero degrees of separation for at least two families.

Community members in Aurora shared their incredible stories of loved ones’ survival Friday and continue to pray for each other following the movie theater massacre.

“The first thing we see is a 13, 14 year old girl with a bullet wound in her leg, in her stomach and probably her chest,” said witness Shayla Roeder.

There were those who came face to face with the gunman, including Marcus Weaver.

“Shots were fired and you could see the bullets. The white spray of like the light that emanated from the gun,” Weaver said.

Those whose family members were in harms way also spoke out.

“We’re okay, we’re pretty shaken up,” said Jamie Fry.

Jamie Fry’s sister, Jacci, was wounded in the movie theater shooting. The 23-year-old Byram Township, New Jersey native moved to Colorado in February and was at that midnight screening of “The Dark Knight Rises” with about 15 friends.

Fry was hit by shrapnel and overcome with tear gas.

“We’re just really happy that she’s okay, and it could have been a lot worse,” Jamie Fry said of her sister.

Another local victim lives in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

Chris Rapoza, 28, posted pictures online of himself lying down in his bloody shirt and detailed what happened, saying “some (expletive) psycho decided to open fire on the crowd. I was grazed in the back with a bullet but am fine.”

His neighbors wish him well.

“I saw pictures Facebook he posted him in the hospital. And stuff like that I’m just glad to see he’s okay,” said neighbor Devon John.

When asked what he would say when he saw him again in the apartment building, John laughed and said he’d tell him “You’re a blessed guy to be alive.”
