22-Year-Old New York State Senate Candidate Defends Hot Pink Campaign Website

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mindy Meyer, a Republican candidate for the state Senate, seems to be taking her campaign playbook from "Legally Blonde."

The 22-year-old Touro College law student from Brooklyn has a hot pink website with the slogan, "I'm Senator And I Know It" -- a spin on the hit LMFAO song "I'm Sexy and I Know It."

"I have a very creative side to me," Meyer told 1010 WINS. "I just chose to channel those energies into the website for the purpose of attracting the young population's attention and getting them interested and excited into politics by using a contemporary, catchy, instrumental version of a song and it sounded good, 'I'm Senator and I Know It."

Meyer wants to energize the youth vote and she fashioned her web site with that in mind.

"I've been on many websites of many different senators of the 50 states doing research and let me tell you one thing, I fell asleep on most of them," Meyer said. "I wanted mine to be fresh, young, animated, representing my adventurous side."

The pink inspiration for the website came from Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon's character in the movie "Legally Blonde."

Meyer insists she means business and isn't worried that she won't be taken seriously because of her website.

"As long as I represent the issues that they want me to and I adequately represent my constituents and care about the issues then they should not have a problem with it," Meyer said.

On her website, the Orthodox Jewish woman claims to be "the first young woman in the history of New York to run for New York State Senate."

Meyer is running against incumbent Democrat Kevin Parker, who pointed out a problem with her website to the Daily News.

Parker said the site shows a picture of Meyer with the U.S. Capitol building in the background, not the state Capitol in Albany, which is where she would work if she won the election.
