NEW YORK (WFAN) – Tim Tebow has been the main attraction since Jets camp opened last week at SUNY Cortland. But even the media sensation was surprised by the attention he received after Saturday’s practice.
The headlines weren’t all for his shaky performance on the field. Some — many, actually — were for his bare-chested trot off it.
“I truly didn’t think it was going to be such a big deal,” Tebow told the New York Post.
The Jets backup quarterback struggled in practice Saturday and was the subject of some scattered heckles. He later peeled off his shirt and jogged off the field in a driving rain.
Suddenly, Twitter was abuzz and a photo of Tebow’s “Chariots of Fire” moment quickly went viral.
“Oh gosh … the slow motion run,” said linebacker Bart Scott. “Like I told him, I’ve never seen anybody decide to take their shirt off in the rain. Usually I put stuff on.
“But then maybe it was holy water, I don’t know.”
Tebow, no stranger to locker-room razzing from his Jets teammates, took it all in stride.
“When we walked into the quarterbacks meeting room, we told Tim, ‘We’re just glad you kept your shirt on for the meeting,’ ” quarterback Greg McElroy said Sunday. “Sure enough, there it came off and he sat shirtless for about 30 minutes.”
Sports fans had a warmup for the Tebow skin show earlier this month when Australian hurdler Michelle Jenneke’s pre-race routine went viral:
