Even then, you still have a decision to make, Maine or Connecticut style? Maine style is cold and the lobster is mixed with lemon-tinged mayo. Connecticut style is warm and the lobster is poached in butter. Tough choice, but I’m going with warm butter over cold mayo today. Next time, who knows?
Red Hook’s lobster rolls are $16, which is more than I usually spend for lunch. Is it worth the extra lunch money?
One thing was immediately clear: They didn’t skimp on lobster. This sucker was packed with lobster meat. In fact, the roll was so full that it was a little tricky to pick up at first, but I managed.
People who know lobster well will tell you that knuckle and claw meat are the tastiest parts of the lobster, and that’s exactly what’s in this lobster roll. Each piece of lobster was meaty, juicy and buttery.
The roll was nicely toasted and very buttery as well.
The lobster roll was topped with paprika and scallions. The paprika added some depth and earthiness to the flavor, and the scallions added a little bite.
With some lobster rolls, I’m hungry by 3pm or so. Not today. This lobster roll was big enough and meaty enough to hold me until dinner, which is not an easy feat.
If you want to try some variation, not only can you get it Maine style, but there is a new Tuscan style lobster roll, which is tossed in a homemade basil vinaigrette. That sounds delicious!
As for whether it’s worth the extra lunch money, I can’t answer that for you. If you love lobster, this is as good as it gets. If you love money, then it’s your call whether it’s worth it.
