Charlene Spierer: Test Results On Skull Could Take Weeks

INDIANAPOLIS (CBSNewYork/AP) -- The mother of an Indiana University student from Westchester who has been missing for more than a year says her family is awaiting word on whether a skull found in the White River in Indianapolis belongs to her daughter.

Charlene Spierer says in a letter posted on a blog dedicated to the search for Lauren Spierer that it could be eight weeks before they know results of testing on the skull found July 8 by a fisherman. Divers searched but found no additional remains.

"We are waiting to find out if a skull found in the White River might be Lauren's. It's chilling to say the words," she says in the letter that is addressed to the person who has information about her daughter's disappearance. "I find it incomprehensible that if by chance you are reading this, you know the answer already."

The 20-year-old was last seen on June 3, 2011 after a night out with friends in Bloomington, Indiana where she went to school.

She was last seen wearing black pants and a white top and left without her shoes or cell phone. She was later seen on surveillance video stumbling out of an elevator at her apartment.

Back in April, the Spierers said they wanted to keep up attention about their daughter's disappearance even though they realize she's likely dead.

In her letter, Charlene Spierer says waiting eight weeks for test results on the skull is "80,640 minutes of agony."

"I will never forget you for as long as I live," she writes. "I hope that every time you look into a mirror you remember the choices you made on June 3, 2011. I hope with every breath you take, you remember Lauren."

This is the second time Charlene Spierer has written an open letter to the person who knows what happened to Lauren.

In March, she posted a letter titled "You know where she is."

She says in Thursday's post that Lauren's dental records and DNA are on file with federal authorities.

Police have said they've received thousands of tips in the case.

The Spierers ask anyone with information to contact Beau Dietl Associates at 1-800-777-9366, www.investigations.com or the Bloomington Police Department at (812) 339-4477.
