Mets Minor League Ace Zack Wheeler Receives Triple-A Call-Up
NEW YORK (WFAN) - Mets top minor league prospect Zack Wheeler was called up to Triple-A Buffalo on Wednesday.
Perhaps he's set to follow the footsteps of Matt Harvey and receive a big league audition before the end of 2012? Don't count on it, says Sandy Alderson.
"I think it's unlikely," the Mets general manager told Newsday.
A concern for the Mets is Wheeler's innings limit. Wheeler surpassed last year's mark of 115. He has thrown 116 innings so far this season.
Over 19, Double-A appearances, Wheeler has recorded a 10-6 record with an ERA of 3.26. He's stuck out 117 batters, while only walking 43.
Despite his high potential, the Mets appear willing to hold Wheeler back and stick closely to his innings limit. Unless the Mets' rotation is decimated by injuries, Wheeler will remain in Triple-A for the remainder of the 2012 season.
The 22-year-old is set to pitch for Buffalo on Sunday in his Triple-A debut.
Whether or not Wheeler joins Harvey at Citi Field in 2012, the duo are a huge part of the Mets' future. Harvey followed-up his sterling debut performance with another impressive start against the San Francisco Giants at At&T Park on Tuesday.
Mets fans are hoping they'll see Wheeler debut in Flushing sooner rather than later.
