EDGEWATER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – After an SUV plowed through a fence on Gorge Road at around 2:40 on Saturday morning, it fell about 100 feet, smashing into a patio behind the Aventine Condos complex which is right off of River Road.

Edgewater Police Captain William Skidmore said that the driver, a 37-year-old male from Fairview, New Jersey, never had a chance to survive.

1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reports

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A vehicle did leave the roadway, and it dropped approximately 100 feet to the ground,” Skidmore told 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck. “It landed on the patio but it did not hit the building. It did not hit the structure.”

There were no other injuries — as the driver was alone in the SUV — and no one was hurt at the condo structure.

As to why this happened?

“(We) really don’t have a cause yet,” Skidmore said. “(It) may be days down the road until we can actually figure out what led up to the accident.”
