NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — One person was killed and three others were hurt in an overnight crash involving a garbage truck and an SUV in Brooklyn.
It happened in Bensonhurst around 2 a.m. Wednesday.
WCBS 880’s Alex Silverman reports
Police said the driver of the SUV, who appeared to be drunk, went through a stop sign at the intersection of 20th Avenue and 61 Street, hitting the garbage truck head-on.
The impact knocked the truck on its side, throwing a worker from the back, according to emergency responders. The driver of the truck managed to crawl out.
The passenger of the SUV, 45-year-old John Larocca, was killed.
“My wife was running through the house screaming. I didn’t know what happened, then they told me,” his stepfather John Thompson told WCBS 880’s Alex Silverman.
Thompson said Larocca was just married six months ago.
The two sanitation workers were taken to the hospital and are both listed in stable condition.
The driver of the SUV was arrested. Charges are pending.
