Eric Smith To Miss Rest Of Jets' Preseason

NEW YORK (WFAN) - According to the Daily News, New York Jets' safety Eric Smith is out for the rest of the Jets' preseason schedule.  Smith suffered an MCL injury on his left knee during Friday night's preseason loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.

An MRI was taken following the game, which came back negative.

The injury to Smith leaves the Jets very thin at safety behind their two starters, LaRon Landry and Yeremiah Bell.

Antonio Allen, Josh Bush, D'Anton Lynn and recently-signed rookie Marcus Lott are the current backups on the Jets' roster.

Smith has been troubled by knee injuries throughout his career.  In addition to the MCL injury, he also suffered a hip contusion.  Smith played part of last season with a meniscus tear in his left knee.

The Jets begin their regular season schedule against the Buffalo Bills on September 9.  They're hoping that Smith will return in time for their regular season opener.

Are the Jets too thin at safety following Smith's injury?  Do they need to acquire another experienced safety?  Let us know...
