NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – The Manhattan district attorney’s office will be getting a new cybercrime lab with the help of $4.2 million from the City Council.

In today’s era of smart phones and social media, District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said nearly every criminal investigation has a digital component, whether it’s financial fraud, terrorism or street crime.

“The Internet is the crime scene of our 21st century,” Vance said. “When your cell phone is on you essentially leave digital bread crumbs.”

“In this day and age we need to be as sophisticated as criminals are,” Council Speaker Christine Quinn said.

Officials hope the new crime lab will help speed investigations and allow the unit to do more work.

“We’re in a battle that is going to be a long-term battle,” Vance said. “It is a battle that is going to require us to continue to devote more resources, new resources, and new training.”
