Police: Pit Bull Puppy Tossed Out Of Moving Car In Brentwood

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A pit bull puppy is fighting for his life after police said he was tied in a plastic bag and flung out of a moving car in Brentwood.

The malnourished dog, named Joey, was found in a black plastic bag at the closed Pilgrim Psychiatric Center near the Sagtikos Parkway on Saturday afternoon.

A witness apparently saw someone toss the bag out of a car and called for help after hearing cries coming from the bag.

Joey suffered a broken neck and had bite wounds on his neck, indicating that he may have been used as bait to train other dogs to fight, Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, said.

"He was screaming in agony, we quickly had to sedate him and get his pain controlled and put a cast around his neck," Dr. Lynda Loudon, chief of emergency medical care at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island, said. "He's been getting better everyday."

Joey is believed to be about 3-months-old.

Veterinarians said he weighs 10 pounds, where as a healthy pit bull puppy his age would weigh at least 15 pounds.

Loudon said Joey has regained use of his hind legs and is hoping he'll be able to move his front legs too.

The SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
