Red Bulls Sign English Midfielder Lloyd Sam

HARRISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Red Bulls have signed English midfielder Lloyd Sam.

The MLS club announced the signing on Thursday, saying the 27-year-old will be available to play once his transfer papers are in hand.

A native of Leeds, England, Sam played last season with Notts County of the English League One after being loaned there by Leeds. He scored five goals in 10 games, highlighted by a hat trick against Yeovil Town. He had two goals for Leeds the previous season in 35 matches.

Sam started his professional career with Charlton Athletic, then of the Premier League. He also has played for Leyton Orient, Sheffield Wednesday and Southend United.

In the past few weeks the Red Bulls have acquired goalkeeper Luis Robles and Tim Cahill from the English Premier League.
