United Airlines Flight Sent Back To Newark Airport Due To Engine Trouble

NEWARK, NJ(CBSNewYork) -- Witnesses reported seeing a fireball shoot out of an airplane in New Jersey on Saturday night.

The Boeing 757 developed engine trouble shortly after takeoff and flew in circles to burn fuel before landing back at Newark Airport.

United Airlines flight 96 had been bound for Berlin, Germany. A FBI spokeswoman told CNN that the plane blew a tire during takeoff, the Federal Aviation Administration was unable to confirm that statement.

Witnesses described hearing a sound similar to a helicopter and seeing black smoke and fire spitting out of the engine

A Port Authority spokesperson said that everybody on board the flight arrived back at the airport safely.
