New Logo To Get Rid Of 'Taxi' From NYC's Yellow Cabs

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The word "taxi" will soon disappear from the doors of yellow New York City cabs.

A symbol of a bold yellow capital "T" inside a black circle will be featured on all cabs. It is a larger version of a symbol first introduced five years ago.

The new logo apparently emerged from work being done on the "Taxi of Tomorrow."

Fare information will be eliminated from the passenger door and instead appear on the video screen inside the vehicle.

One cabbie told 1010 WINS that the new look spells trouble, fearing that people will not know what all those bright yellow cars are if they don't see the word "taxi."

"Who's going to know what that means, 'T?'" he said. "It's not going to be easy...people, like tourists, are not going to know it's a taxi."

Others believe New Yorkers and even tourists will be able to figure it out.

"The yellow taxi is so famous I think it'll go off smooth, we'll know it's a taxi," one tourist said.

"People are very educated, they know about yellow cabs," one cabbie said.
