NYC Parks Dept. Considers Solution To Cyclists Vs. Runners In Central Park

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Officials at the New York City Parks Department say that they may have found a solution to the ongoing battle between bikers and joggers in Central Park - a new traffic pattern.

On the West Park Drive Friday morning, reporter Alex Silverman had no luck trying to flag down the bikers that fly down a hill in packs, but the pedestrians were perfectly willing to whine about their two-wheeled counterparts.

"Well, you want to stay out of their way. Let's put it like that," one told Silverman.

"The bikers think they own the park. They will practically run over people," said another.

Outgoing Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe said the city is looking at ways to keep these two groups safer, perhaps having separate lanes for walkers and bikers.

Most say they'd be all for it, but a woman named Rebecca shrugged it off, saying she has bigger worries early in the morning.

"Could be like a 'Law & Order: SVU' episode. I don't feel unsafe that I'm going to get hit by a biker, no," she said.

A jogging traffic court judge said he's never seen a ticket for a speeding biker because he said police aren't trained to use radar on them.

What do you think should be done, if anything, about the situation in the park? Share your ideas in the comments section below.
