Giants' Osi Umenyiora Sits Out Practice With Swelling In Knee

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora was held out of practice on Sunday because of swelling in his knee.

It was Umenyiora's right knee, according to the New York Post. That could be a cause of concern, considering he had arthroscopic surgery on the same troublesome knee last August.

But coach Tom Coughlin isn't too worried.

"Osi's got some swelling so we shut him down," he said Sunday. "It's more precautionary than anything. He's practiced every practice."

Umenyiora also had surgery on his left knee in 2008.

Meanwhile, veteran defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is holding out hope of playing for the Giants this season despite developing a blood clot in training camp.

Rogers has been on the sideline the past few practices, ring a stationary bike and exercising with other injured players.

The 33-year-old said Sunday that he was hurt at training camp at the University at Albany and his leg swelled after the Giants preseason game in Jacksonville on Aug. 10. The Giants initially said it was a season-ending injury because he would not be able to play while taking blood-thinning medication.

Rogers, however, got a second opinion and he said there is a chance he can play.

"We're still in the process of making that decision," he said Sunday.

The Giants have to cut their roster to 53 players by Friday and it's hard to say whether they can afford to keep him on the active roster with the injury.

Still, Rogers wants to play.

"That's most definitely the point, to try and get out there as soon as possible and be able to be effective by whatever means they need me to be effective," he said.

EXTRA POINTS: Chris Snee also sat out practice. ... Second-year WR Jerrel Jernigan (leg) was a newcomer to the injured list. ...LB Jacquian Williams, who is getting back in gear after a hip injury, had a nice interception in the practice.
