"We had a great year with regard to attendance. We looked at the attendance figures from from January 1st til just about mid-August and we're just about over 800,000 more visitors this year compared to last year," state parks spokesman George Gorman told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs.

He credits all the hot, humid days for getting people to the beaches.

"People were sick of staying in the air conditioning and got out and enjoyed the beaches," he said.

He added that this year's big beach crowds were reminiscent of what he called the good old days.

"Amazing weather and amazing attendance," he said.

Gorman expects big crowds again this long Labor Day weekend.
