Taylor Swift Aimed For "Quirky" In Her Latest Video

During a conversation Thursday evening (Aug. 30) held high atop Times Square in New York City, Taylor Swift discussed her new video for "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" with MTV News reporter Sway. Taylor looked as classy as always, wearing a modestly styled red-and-white dress, and she appeared outwardly excited--especially when the crowd welcomed her by singing the words to her new song.

When Sway congratulated her on her record-breaking, chart-topping hit, Taylor graciously thanked her loyal listeners. "It’s all up to the fans, whether it has a Number One by it, or some other number, that’s all determined by how many they decide to buy."

And as every Taylor fan knows by now, the wait is over for the world premiere Taylor's new video for "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together." It premiered last night on MTV and CMT, and you can watch it right here.

The video was shot in a single take with no edits–and it involved five costume changes–from flannel pajamas and nerdy glasses to snazzy party outfits. It also involves rooms full of young people dancing and singing along–some playing Bo Diddley-style guitars, others strumming autoharps, and most adorned in furry animal costumes. The video takes more than a few cues from filmmaker Michel Gondry and is practically oozing with cuteness.

What was her inspiration for this eccentric video? “I wanted the video to look as quirky as the song sounds,” Taylor explained. And quirky it is--along with the costumed dancers there is cable-knit wallpaper, cardboard cars, and a lot of very quick costume changes.

“Behind the camera, when you don’t see me on film, when there’s a second where the camera goes off of me for a second, basically what was happening directly behind the camera was me just ripping clothes off, putting clothes on. Not caring who could see what. It was all modesty had to go out the window,” Swift said. “All my clothes were put together with Velcro and snaps so that I could have three different outfits layered on top of each other.”

Speaking of outfits, Sway also complimented Taylor on being a “fashion icon” and asked who inspired her style. The mature-beyond-her-years country sensation replied that she is inspired by “women who look really lady like,” mentioning women of the ’50’s and ’60’s, notably, Audrey Hepburn. She loves the classy look in the old black and white photos, and, as is apparent by her frequent make-up choices, she loves “red lips.” With regards to fashion, Taylor admits that it’s “important to try out different things until you find out what you like.”

With her continued success, Taylor's fashion choices do seem to be working--for inspiration, just check out her red carpet fashion in the gallery below.
