New York City Pays Out Millions In Settlements For Violence In Jails
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Violence in New York City jails has cost taxpayers big bucks.
In the past three months, the city has agreed to pay out nearly $4.4 million in settlements for prisoner beatings or deaths, according to a New York Times report.
The most recent settlement was approved on Friday. The city has agreed to pay $850,000 to a man severely beaten by fellow inmates two years ago at Rikers Island, according to the Times.
That payout follows a $2 million settlement in June with the mother of an 18-year-old beaten to death, also in a teen unit at Rikers.
In July, the city settled for $1.5 million with the family of an inmate who died while struggling with guards at the prison ward in Bellevue Hospital.
