Rape Reported In Riverside Park, Police Hunt For Potential Suspect

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Police are hunting for a man who allegedly raped a 19-year-old woman in Riverside Park on Monday morning.

The woman had been arguing with her boyfriend near the park. Police officers told the couple to go home and the woman walked back into the park alone, according to a source close to law enforcement. The woman's boyfriend went into the park looking for her and found her on the ground where she claimed to have been raped, the source said.

The woman told police that she was attacked by a Hispanic man wearing a fitted baseball cap, according to a law enforcement source.

Upper West Side residents told CBS 2's Sean Hennessey that they were shocked by the attack.

"I go running in here every day, that's horrible. I'm probably going to go running alone in the dark anymore," said Bree Tse.

Parks Advocate Geoffry Croft said that violence has been on the rise in parks around the city.

"Violence in parks has exploded this summer," he said.

The woman was listed in stable condition at St. Luke's Hospital.
