Mets Ace R.A. Dickey Signs Deal To Have Three Children's Books Published
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — R.A. Dickey's next pitch is for kids.
The New York Mets' ace has a deal with Dial Books for Younger Readers for three books, the publisher announced on Thursday.
The books will include a children's version of his memoir, "Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth," scheduled for next fall. His autobiography was released on March 29, and it detailed, among other things, the sexual abuse he suffered as a child and the suicidal thoughts he pondered an as adult.
He also has plans for two picture books, one of which will be entitled "Knuckleball Ned."
Dickey has gained a reputation as being one of the most interesting and eclectic players in all of sports. In addition to being a self-proclaimed "Star Wars Nerd," the 37-year-old has an adventurous side to him as well. In the offseason, the knuckleball sensation climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in an effort to raise awareness about the issue of human trafficking in India. His climb helped raise over $100,000 for the Bombay Teen Challenge.
As far as his performance on the hill, the 2012 All-Star has been nothing short of sensational. Currently among the top of the pack in the National League Cy Young Award race, Dickey currently boasts an 18-4 record with a 2.64 ERA. He has tossed five complete games -- three of which were shutouts -- and has recorded 195 strikeouts to just 45 walks.
The Mets have a $5 million option for Dickey for 2013.
