SHIRLEY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man has been charged with animal cruelty after more than 20 dogs were taken from his home on Sunday night, officials said.

Edward Erdman, 38, is accused of keeping more then 20 pit bulls in "deplorable" conditions both inside and outside the home at 567 Rowlinson Drive, said Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk County SPCA.

"The conditions these dogs were forced to endure were horrible," Gross said.

The animals were living in their own excrement with no food or water and some appeared to be "severely emaciated," Gross said.

Neighbors said the constant barking indicated that something wasn't right at the home.

"Eight or 10 dogs stacked in cages in the garage, another 10 or 12 outside, barking and barking for five years," one man told WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs.

The dogs, both puppies and adults, are being treated at Brookhaven Animal Shelter.

The investigation is continuing.
