Think Tank Names Kingsborough Community College One Of The Country's Best

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A local community college is being recognized as one of the best in the country.

Kingsborough Community College was named to the Aspen Institute's list of 10 best community colleges.

"What makes it exciting for us is that it really is a recognition of the hard work that's been done by the faculty and staff at Kingsborough over a number of years. We're delighted that work has been recognized," college president Dr. Regina Peruggi told 1010 WINS.

The Aspen institute focused on the graduation rates of the colleges, especially as it related to minority and lower-income students.

Peruggi said the school's "ability to graduate diverse groups of students -- that would mean minority and people of color as well as Caucasian students -- at approximately the same graduation rates" is part of the reason Kingsborough was recognized.

The college president also said the school's "learning communities" also contributed to their high ranking.

It has really has worked very, very well with freshmen, new students coming in because a community is 25 students at a time. So they bond together as a group," Peruggi said.

Kingsborough Community College is located on Manhattan Beach on the eastern end of Coney Island.
