Islanders, Matt Martin Agree To 4-Year Deal

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The New York Islanders and left winger Matt Martin agreed to a four-year contract Saturday night.

The 23-year-old Martin, 6-foot-3 and 210 pounds, had seven goals, seven assists and 121 penalty minutes in 80 games last season. He also set an NHL season record for hits with 374.

Martin has 12 goals, 18 assists and 294 penalty minutes in 153 career games, all with the Islanders.

The deal was signed before the clock struck midnight as the league and the players union were unable to reach agreement on a new labor deal.

The National Hockey League locked out its players at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, the third major pro sport to impose a work stoppage in the last 18 months, behind the NFL and NBA.
