NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Goodbye, old friend.

It was seen on Seinfeld and Law & Order. It graced the field at Shea Stadium during the 1986 World Series. Younger Mets fans know it best from game broadcasts on SNY.

Arguably the most revered mustache in sports history, courtesy Keith Hernandez, will soon be a thing of the past, according to Neil Best of Newsday.

In a shocking – just ask any Mets fan — recent interview with the New York Times, Hernandez threatened to shave his famous lip whiskers before the Mets’ season finale on Oct. 3.

Turns out it’ll be buzzed bare prior to the team’s final home game, an afternoon tilt against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sept. 27, Best reported.

Hernandez’s big shave and lip reveal is scheduled for 11:45 a.m. outside Citi Field and will be open to the public, Best reported. Sponsored by Schick Hydro, it will benefit an adult day center in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, named for Hernandez’s mother, Jacqueline, according to Best.

And yes, SNY will reportedly air clips from the event.

Hernandez’s gloried facial hair won Newsday’s “Mustache Madness” in 2007. That same year, he took home the American Mustache Institute’s top sports ‘stache award as a write-in candidate. In celebration, again in ’07, the Mets gave away thousands of fake lip whiskers on “Slap on a ‘Stache” night.

“I’m Keith Hernandez,” a 19-minute film by Rob Perri, was even released, which in part explored the Mets great’s mustache “as a symbol of male virility.”

Hernandez, no longer a pitchman for “Just For Men,” told the Times that he’s been letting his mustache go gray — a look he’s “not totally happy with.”

But will he — or Mets fans — be happy with what’s underneath?

Stay tuned…
