'Rusty,' Four Other Horses Housed On Condemned Property In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A property deemed unsafe for humans is apparently fine for a horse.

That doesn't sit well with State Sen. Jeff Klein.

1010 WINS' Juliet Papa talks to Jeff Klein

Klein and neighbors have taken up the cause of Rusty, who is confined to a stable among dilapidated shacks on the East End of Pelham Parkway in The Bronx.

"The Department of Buildings has already dedicated this area as too dangerous for any humans or any people, yet Rusty the horse and four other horses are housed on the condemned property," Klein told 1010 WINS' reporter Juliet Papa.

Nearby resident Roxanne Delgado told Papa it's sad and dangerous. "They basically are incarcerated for days in a very small stable."

Klein said Rusty's life is in danger, and added if people can't be on condemned property, animals shouldn't either. Therefore, he is proposing legislation requiring animals also be barred from condemned property.

Humane Society Director Brad Shapiro said this should not be allowed to happen. "Here we are in The Bronx standing in front of what is an actual house of horrors--more fit for Halloween than a horse stable."

The stable is next door to a proposed development for a residential high-rise and possible Metro-North station, Papa reported.
