Mets Great Keith Hernandez Shaves Famous Mustache, Reveals New Look
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Keith Hernandez’s famous mustache is going… going… gone!
The former big leaguer’s big shave and lip reveal took place Thursday outside Citi Field in front of a curious crowd of Mets fans.
“I feel 10 years younger,” Hernandez said after the whiskers came off.
Schick Hydro, which sponsored the event, donated $10,000 to benefit the Jacqueline Hernandez Adult Day Health Center in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, named for Keith’s mother.
“It’s all for a good cause,” Hernandez told WFAN’s Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton Thursday morning. “Any time you can raise money for something that’s dear to your heart … it’s all good.”

Hernandez was perhaps best known for his time with the 1986 champion Mets. But that doesn’t mean his mustache hasn’t had its fair share of glory.
“I don’t know that I’d call it famous,” a humble Hernandez said.
Many would disagree.
The current SNY analyst’s facial hair, once seen on “Seinfeld,” “Law & Order” and Just For Men commercials, won Newsday’s “Mustache Madness” in 2007. That same year he took home the American Mustache Institute’s top sports ‘stache award as a write-in candidate. In celebration, again in ’07, the Mets gave away thousands of fake lip whiskers on “Slap on a ‘Stache” night.
“I’m Keith Hernandez,” a 19-minute film by Rob Perri, was released, which in part explored the Mets great’s mustache “as a symbol of male virility.”
It even took home the top spot in our very own all-time baseball mustache countdown.
Hernandez told Boomer and Carton he last shaved during a slump “in 1987 or ’88.”
“I was in my hotel room, getting out of the shower for the day game (and) I just shaved it,” he said. “I don’t know what happened results-wise, if it was effective or not, but I grew it right back.”
