FARMINGDALE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) - Skateboarders reaching speeds of up to 40 miles per hour have Farmingdale officials considering banning the sport on two very steep streets.

WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs On The Story

It would be banned on Fairview Road and Yoakum Street, all in the name of public safety, according to Mayor Ralph Ekstrand.

What about residents’ reaction? Well, it’s mixed.

“I’m all for safety,” said one. “Somebody’s got the thumb down on them once in a while.”

“I think that’s way too far. I think that’s an infringement on freedoms and rights,” said another. “That is happening, you know, on so many different levels right now… I think freedom should take priority.”

Both sides argued about the ban plan for more than two hours on Monday night.

They’ll continue the debate at a meeting later this month.

Violators of the ban would be hit with $100 fines.
