NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Seeking depth at a position decimated by injuries, the Jets have signed wide receiver Jason Hill.

The move was announced on Wednesday, in lockstep with Santonio Holmes headed to the injured reserved list with a season-ending Lisfranc injury in his left foot, suffered during the Jets’ loss to the 49ers.

“We want to get faster as a football team,” Jets head coach Rex Ryan said of Hill. “We think he’s a guy that has some tools, he’s played in this league, and we think he can do some good things for us.”

The 2007 third-round pick out of Washington State has a brief history with Gang Green, though it’s not exactly a positive one.

Hill called star cornerback Darrelle Revis “overhyped” last season, stating that his fame was more a product of playing in New York than of having tremendous ability.

Revis responded simply, stating, “I don’t even know who that dude is.”

The 27-year-old played with the 49ers from 2007 until 2010, when he was released. He was subsequently picked up on waivers by the Jacksonville Jaguars, but was waived in late 2011.

The six-foot-one, 192-pounder signed with the Denver Broncos on February 15, but was released on August 31.

In 10 games last season for the Jags, Hill caught 25 passes for 367 yards and three touchdowns.
