Veteran Nassau County Police Officer Struck By Car Remains In Critical Condition

LAWRENCE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A veteran Nassau County police officer is fighting for his life following a horrible accident.

The unidentified officer is undergoing surgery Wednesday to repair a pelvic fracture, CBS 2 reported.

Police said the 57-year-old officer was conducting speed checks on the Nassau Expressway in Lawrence around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday when he was hit by an Audi.

The Fourth Precinct officer suffered several injuries including a fractured skull, fractured pelvis, fractured right leg and massive internal bleeding, police said. He was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center where he remains in critical but stable condition.

The 43-year-old driver of the Audi, who had his two children -- ages 20 and 9 -- in the car, remained at the scene.

Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the crash.

It is unlikely charges will be filed, CBS 2 reported.
