MetroCards Begin Featuring Advertisements On The Front Of Card

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - Those ubiquitous yellow MetroCards have gotten a make-over.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said starting Sunday, MetroCards will feature advertising on the front of the card.

The change comes as the cash-strapped agency looks to bolster its finances in any way it can.

The first MetroCard ad was bought by the clothing chain The Gap, and features the wording 'Be Bright NYC.' The MetroCards with the Gap ad will be sold at 10 subway stations.

MTA chairman Joe Lhota said the agency will monitor public acceptance of the advertising to ensure that it doesn't "interfere with use of the transit system.''

This is the first change to the gold and blue front of the MetroCard in 15 years, according to the MTA
