NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) – A man is in critical but stable condition after being shot by police in Brooklyn.

The incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. Thursday on Havemeyer Street in Williamsburg.

Two officers chased the suspect on foot moments after the man had run from an SUV with North Carolina plates, 1010 WINS’ Glenn Schuck reported. Other officers had been pursuing the vehicle because it had its lights off, Schuck reported.

The suspect turned around and fired two rounds at the officers with an illegal 9 mm handgun that was purchased out of state, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

The officers fired back, shooting a total of nine rounds.

“One officer fired seven rounds, the other officer fired two rounds,” Kelly said.

The suspect, who had been arrested at least three previous times, was struck nine times and taken to Bellevue Hospital.

No police officers were injured.

The investigation is continuing.
