NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Central Park goes to the dogs on Saturday as the Central Park Conservancy hosts the 10th annual My Dog Loves Central Park Country Fair.

More than 1,000 dogs and their owners are expected to turn out at the Naumburg Bandshell, mid-park at 72nd street, to celebrate all the fun Central Park has to offer dogs and their people, along with education and useful services for you and your pet.

This free event will feature games, demonstrations and activities, including “Best In Park” competitions testing your dog’s behavior skills.  Kids can play musical chairs with their dogs, and one lucky pooch will be crowned “Best Lap Dog”.

“Central Park is a backyard for so many dog owners who need to walk their dogs several times a day, and dog owners are one of the park’s largest user groups”, Terri Carta, Director of Public Programs for the CPC tells 1010 WINS.  “The Central Park Paws program was started about ten years ago to work and communicate with the dog community that lives right around the park, so this is an important event, because it’s a way of getting everybody together all around the theme of dogs and the park and having fun in a responsible way that takes care of Central Park now and forever”.

David Muriello of CATCH Canine Trainers Academy will emcee, and Bill Berloni of Theatrical Animals will make a special guest appearance, along with Sunny, the rescue dog co-starring in the 2012 Broadway revival of Annie.

The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals will offer microchipping, dog owners can attempt the Canine Good Citizen test for American Kennel Club certification, facilitated by the ASPCA, and representatives from Central Park Paws will be on hand to answer questions about dog owners’ rights and responsibilities while in the park.

Plus, you’ll be able to talk about how much your dog loves Central Park on film as part of the Dog Tales History Project.

The 10th Annual My Dog Loves Central Park Country Fair takes place from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. rain or shine, sponsored by Banfield Pet Hospital, Biscuits & Bath, Freshpet, PetSmart, and Swifto.
