Long Island Man Spent Five Months Growing Massive, Award-Winning Pumpkin

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- A big pumpkin sitting on Scott Armstrong's front yard in Commack recently took the top prize at the annual "Giant Pumpkin Weigh-Off" in Westbury. The massive pumpkin tipped the scales at 12,079 lbs making it the heaviest pumpkin ever grown on Long Island.

This year's pumpkin beat Armstrong's previous record of 12,049 lbs, which he set in 2007. Growing the award-winning pumpkin took five months of hard work.

"Imagine pruning a plant that takes up to fifteen-hundred square feet, every couple of days, and that will give you a little insight in what it takes to do this," he said.

Armstrong's pumpkins have won the weigh-off three years in a row.

If he hopes to make it into the Guinness Book of World Records for the heaviest pumpkin ever, Armstrong will have to top 18,010 lbs.
