NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Academy Award-winning rapper and record producer DJ Paul was arrested this past weekend for allegedly carrying a stun gun in his pocket and an open can of beer in his hand.

Police confirmed to 1010 WINS that DJ Paul, 37, whose real name is Paul Beauregard, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor weapons and open alcohol violations.

Beauregard, known as half of the Memphis-based rap group the Three 6 Mafia, was stopped by police when he was spotted with an open can of Corona at 8:12 p.m. Sunday in front of 498 Ninth Ave. in Hell's Kitchen, the New York Post reported.

The 9th Ave. Café and Grill is located at the address in front of which Beauregard was arrested.

Officers later found DJ Paul was also carrying a Taser, police told the New York Post.

DJ Paul told police he carries the stun weapon for personal protection, the newspaper reported.

He was arraigned Monday released without a bond being set, the Post reported.

In an unrelated incident, "Hustle & Flow" co-star Taryn Manning, 33, was charged with assault for allegedly attacking and choking her personal assistant at a Chelsea hotel room last week.
