NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The New York City Council is working on a way to help women access abortions without what some call intimidation at the front door.

WCBS 880’s Alex Silverman On The Story

According to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, protests at abortion clinics, “have become increasingly divisive and disruptive.”

On Friday at City Hall, she showed a video showing demonstrators appearing to block a woman from getting to the door of a clinic in Queens. The would-be patient was pinned to a wall and ended up walking away.

“Going to the doctor has now become a military exercise,” longtime activist and clinic owner Merle Hoffman said.

She calls the so-called demonstrators “bullies.”

“That’s why we’re going to do what New Yorkers always do. We’re going to add good, old-fashioned New York people power to this effort,” Quinn said.

The City Council is organizing volunteers who will be trained to escort women on Saturdays.

She said the right to protest can’t trump the right to access reproductive health care.
