Libby Langdon Hosting Manhattan Session On Decorating Small Spaces

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Autumn rivals spring as the perfect time to de-clutter your home.

"Fall really is the time when we're moving our lifestyles from the outdoors in and it is important to make a few transitions to really warm it up and make it feel cozy," interior designer, author, and TV personality Libby Langdon told WCBS 880's Pat Farnack.

Langdon said clutter can keep you from moving forward mentally.

To get started she suggests pouring a glass of wine, setting a timer for 15 minutes and diving into the chaos.

"Start with the medicine cabinet; start with your desk," Langdon said. "But for those 15 minutes, start throwing things away that you don't need and then create piles of things that you can donate and get a tax write-off before the end of the year."

Langdon said getting rid of the mess will make you feel like you're taking back control of your home.

"Clutter begins because we're afraid, inside, that we're going to lose something," Langdon said. "I went into one client's house and she had her daughter's Girl Scout uniform and her daughter was married and I said, 'Do you have a picture of your daughter in the Girl Scout uniform?' and she said 'Yes' and I said 'Hold on to the picture. Get rid of the uniform.' So, it comes from a place of wanting to hold on to things that we don't want to forget."

Langdon will be offering home tips at a design workshop Thursday, October 25 at 6 p.m. at Resource Furniture at 969 Third Avenue in Manhattan.

She'll also be signing copies of her book "Small Space Solutions."
