NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Police said firefighters responding to a blaze in the Bronx on Thursday found a woman dead with multiple stab wounds and a 1-month-old child who was pulled from the flames but later died.

The 32-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene at 3034 Albany Crescent. Police said she was found on her bed under a burning mattress in a room on the second floor.

The child was rushed to Montefiore Medical Center where she died. The cause of her death has not been determined. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said the child had no stab wounds.

Fire officials said the fire was reported just after 7 p.m. Thursday and was brought under control about a half hour later.
