Much Of Mass Transit Likely To Remain Shuttered Through Tuesday

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Schools, mass transit and other agencies will likely remain shuttered on Tuesday around the Tri-State area due to post-Tropical Storm Sandy's aftermath.

The Port Authority closed John F. Kennedy, Newark and LaGuardia airports until further notice. While most flights were cancelled already, the airports had remained open for stranded passengers.

All subways, Metro-North and Long Island Rail Road service was suspended Sunday and it will remain that way until further notice. Bus service was also suspended.

Amtrak Northeast Corridor services are cancelled through Tuesday.

"The general ability to run the system and keep it safe is in jeopardy," Lhota said.

MTA service will also be shut down on Tuesday, and it is not known when service will be restored. For more from the MTA, click here.

All NJ TRANSIT rail, bus, light rail and access link service has also been halted until further notice.

"We don't know what the impact of this storm is going to be, how long it's going to linger and then once the storm is out, we'll have to make a system-wide assessment as to the equipment and infrastructure to see what damage, if any, has been sustained," said Nancy Snyder with NJ TRANSIT.

The agency announced service would remain suspended on Tuesday.

Access to the LIRR section of Penn Station and to Jamaica Station is restricted. Grand Central Station has been closed.

PATH service was suspended at midnight Sunday and will remain shut down until further notice, the Port Authority said. Bus service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal was halted at 2 a.m. Monday. Maritime facilities are also closed.

Schools in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, parts of New Jersey and Connecticut have all been closed. For a full list of school closures, click here.

All federal buildings and New York State courts are closed. The New York Stock Exchange has cancelled all floor trading for Tuesday.
