NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Tom Coughlin joined Mike Francesa on Tuesday afternoon and admitted the Giants felt the effects of Hurricane Sandy.
Listen: Coughlin Speaks With Mike
“Everyone has been affected,” Coughlin told Francesa. “And our players have, because, remember, they have families, they have wives, they have children. They went through the same things that we all went through.
“You lose power. For example, just as close as Hoboken, there were guys that couldn’t stay in their apartments, couldn’t live in their homes, they had to get out. And then you are always concerned about your wife, your children, whether or not you have gas in the tank, whether or not there is warmth in your home. On a smaller scale, but reflective of what many people went through, certainly we were affected.”
Meanwhile, the Giants had to keep their focus on football while they dealt with personal issues raised by Superstorm Sandy.
“We tried to do the best job we could; we tried to back our week up and tried to put our players in a better position mentally where they could take care of their issues and then come to work.
“For the most part, when we were here, I think the focus was here. But to say that we weren’t affected, no, that would be foolish; that would be naive on my part,” Coughlin explained.
As for current matters, Coughlin is trying to get the Giants back on track after consecutive losses against the Steelers and Bengals. Coughlin believes the Giants need to improve their pass rush and cause more opposition turnovers.
“You’ve got to keep pushing, you’ve got to keep coming,” Coughlin stated. We haven’t always done that. We’re counting on that going forward. That’s always been the signature aspect of our game on defense.”
Pressure and turnovers have made the Giants’ defense one of the most fearsome units in the league in recent seasons. They need to step up the pressure and force more takeaways.
“The number one thing for us, is we’ve got to get back to taking care of the football and getting the takeaways.”
Coughlin shared his thoughts on the streaking Packers.
“They’ve won five in a row and played some really outstanding defensive games. Offensively, Cobb has become the guy. He has emerged and Rodgers is Rodgers. His teammates have great confidence in him.”
“We’re calling it a ‘six-game season.’ We do have the ability to be in position to continue to lead our division, to hold destiny in our own hands,” Coughlin concluded.
