NY Food Truck Lunch: Holy Chipotle 'Durger' & Fries From The Trusty Truck

There haven't been a lot of food trucks in Midtown lately. Most are providing free meals to those in the areas most affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Vendors who are helping those less fortunate are still taking occasional days in their regular Manhattan spots. The ranks of food trucks in Manhattan is thinner than usual, as it should be when there are so many of our fellow New Yorkers who need help.

Right after Hurricane Sandy, the folks in the Trusty Truck spent some time downtown by NYU, when that neighborhood was still dark. They have also been going out to Brooklyn and Queens, the areas where people need help most.

We caught the Trusty Truck back in Midtown, and being spicy food lovers, we've wanted to try the Holy Chipotle durger, which cost $7.50. Remembering that we haven't tried their regular fries, we also put in an order, which cost $2.50.

A durger is a hamburger shaped like a hot dog. It's split in the middle and grilled, so you get even more of that charcoal grilled flavor.

The Holy Chipotle durger is topped with lettuce, tomato, pepper jack cheese, breaded onions and spicy chipotle mayo.

The lengthwise split in the durger helps the toppings interplay more with the meat. Each bite has meat and toppings in a nice proportion.

We really love the onion topping at the Trusty Truck. They are very thin, so the onion taste is not overpowering, and the criunchy breading is light and not overly greasy.

Honorable mention must be given to the pepper jack cheese, which went very well in this sandwich. The chipotle mayo had a nice kick too.

Speaking of honors, the fries were excellent. Some of the potato skin was kept on, and the outsides of the fries were crispy, while the insides were soft. Not easy to do with fries as thick as these. They were also salted the right amount.

Our only complaint with the fries was the size of the portion. We've said it many times before, and we'll say it again, a large portion of fries as a side dish is too much to eat. Give us smaller portions on the side dishes for lunch, so we don't fall into a food coma by 3pm.
