NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) — Police shot and killed a teenager Tuesday night in the South Ward of Newark, according to published reports.
The incident happened around 8 p.m. at Freylinghuysen Avenue and Whittier Place, according to NJ.com.
Police earlier had approached a group nearby at Freylinghuysen Avenue and Foster Street – an area known for drug activity – when they saw one man adjust what looked like a weapon in his waistband, NJ.com reported. The suspect fled when officers exited their squad car, and officers began a chase, the publication reported.
The suspect pulled out the gun and hit an officer in the face, prompting the officers to return fire, NJ.com reported.
The unidentified man was pronounced dead at University Hospital, while the two officers involved were also hospitalized – one for facial injuries, the other for trauma, NJ.com reported.
Newark police were not immediately available for comment Tuesday night.
