Poll Puts Quinn Well Ahead Among Mayoral Candidates

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- So just who is the favorite to be the new mayor of New York City? At least one poll provides some idea.

As WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, the Quinnipiac poll found City Council Speaker Christine Quinn with a huge lead among those who are seen as candidates in next year's mayoral race.

"Christine Quinn, 32 (percent); Bill Thompson, former city comptroller and very strong candidate against (Mayor Michael) Bloomberg last time around, 10 (percent), Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, 9 (percent)," said Quinnipiac Polling Institute director Maurice Carroll.

Carroll said the poll puts support for current city comptroller John C. Liu's mayoral campaign at 5 percent.

A Quinnipiac poll also found a 65 percent approval rating for Quinn in her current job, and a 49 percent approval rating for de Blasio, the New York Times reported. Forty-eight percent of poll respondents gave Liu a positive rating, despite a federal investigation into his campaign finances, the newspaper reported.

Among other officials, current Mayor Bloomberg posted his strongest approval ratings in two years, the New York Times reported. Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott has also seen higher approval ratings since June, the newspaper reported.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman Joseph Lhota has also been named as a possible Republican candidate for mayor, and has won the support of former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani should he decide to run. But the New York Times reported his polling numbers in his current post are weak, with a 45 percent disapproval rate and only a 38 percent approval rate.

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly still has the highest approval rating, the Times reported.
