Teen Charged With Shooting, Killing Man In The Rockaways

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A teenage suspect has been charged with the murder of a man in the Rockaways late last week.

Around 8:15 p.m. Friday, police found Peren Philippe, 21, lying in front of 43-12 Rockaway Beach Blvd., in the Arverne neighborhood, with multiple gunshot wounds on his torso and legs.

Paramedics took Philippe to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, police arrested a suspect and recovered a 9mm handgun.

The suspect, Diamonte Alexander, 18, of Far Rockaway, has been charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

Police have not specified a motive for the shooting.

The Rockaway Peninsula suffered severe damage during Superstorm Sandy, and reports of looting and crime have surged in the time since.
