Dog Found Abused, Abandoned In Bellport In Need Of Surgery

BELLPORT, N.Y (CBSNewYork) -- The Suffolk County SPCA is looking for donations to help an emaciated dog with a severe injury that was rescued last week in Bellport.

The 1-year-old mix-breed pup named Midnight was found abandoned in a yard last Wednesday, officials said.

When she was taken to the Bayport Village Animal Health Center for treatment, vets discovered she had a fractured femur. She was also extremely underweight and infested with fleas and tapeworms.

Dr. Dennis Dougherty said Midnight's injuries were caused "by blunt force trauma."

Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross said Midnight will require expensive surgery to repair the fracture and donations are needed to help pay for the procedure.

"Right now, we're looking to raise some money for the surgery," he said. Gross said they want to do "everything we can to see that she gets the proper treatment."

Investigators said they still don't know how she ended up alone in the yard.

"Hopefully, we'll be able to get it to recover and be able to have it adopted out and I'm sure this will make a wonderful pet," Gross said.
