Giants' Tight End Bennett Saves Falling Fan

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Martellus Bennett self-proclaimed himself as the "Black Unicorn" when he first arrived at Giants' training camp after signing as a free agent.

Now, the nickname is sounding like one of a superhero after the Giants' tight end made perhaps, a life-saving catch to save a falling middle-aged fan.  The man was leaning over the railing by the Giants' tunnel when a young boy accidentally ducked down and sent the man falling 15 feet.

"I was doing what I usually do, moseying to the locker room and meandering around," Bennett told USA Today. "Naturally, I just wanted to step back, but I did the righteous thing and I stepped up. I caught him, I saved his life, I tapped into my inner superhero, which I do have."

Speaking to 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria, Bennett was not ashamed to say he always wanted to be a superhero. In fact, it was on his bucket list.

So when he saw the fan fall over the railing, Bennett just reached for him.

"I had my Giants uniform on, which is my Superman cape," he said.

Bennett also joked about having "Spidey-Senses" and made a catch worthy of the Marvel superhero.  Previously, he hauled-in three catches against the Packers -- but this was his most important grab of the night.

"I'm usually a ninja, but my Spidey-senses told me he was going to take a fall, so I saved his life. He owes me his first-born or something. Actually I don't want that. Maybe a sandwich or something," Bennett said.

When Bennett went into the locker room, Bennett just had to tell the other members of the team.

"I was like, 'Yeah, I just saved some guy's life' when I went in," he said. "Everybody just kind of blew me off."

But there were lots of witnesses, and the tight end was quite pleased.

"It was all a childhood dream to be a superhero. This was like a dream come true," Bennett said.

The man was taken by NJ State Troopers and was booked on undisclosed charges.

What was Bennett's reaction to seeing the fan being taken away by cops?  "That sucks," Bennett said.
