NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow reached out Monday night to high school student-athlete Matt Hardy after a Twitter movement to raise the crash survivor’s spirits took on a life of its own on Twitter.

Shenendehowa seniors Chris Stewart and Deanna Rivers were killed Saturday in a two-vehicle crash on the Northway in Saratoga County. Hardy, a football player for Shen, and Bailey Wind of Shaker High School were also in the SUV and survived the accident.

The Capital Region rallied behind the teens Monday night, getting the hashtag #TebowCallMatt to trend nationwide. #MissyCallBailey, asking for Olympic swimmer Missy Frankin to phone the second survivor, also gained considerable support.

Tebow came through around 9 p.m.

“TIM TEBOW JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH MATT! SUCH A CLASS ACT!!” tweeted Mike Hardy, the brother of Matt Hardy.

Tebow followed with a tweet of his own: “Thanks to everyone who got #TebowCallMatt trending & helped connect us. Matt truly inspired me. God bless y’all.”

Franklin said she tried to reach out to Wind.

“Called Bailey and left her a voicemail,” tweeted Franklin. “Would still love to talk to her. Bailey and her community are in my thoughts and prayers #staystrong.”

Police said the driver of the second vehicle, Dennis Drue of Clifton Park, swerved into the rear of Stewart’s SUV. Drue tested positive for alcohol, police said.

Charges are pending, according to the Albany Times Union.

“The support is amazing but I hope people are praying for Deanna and Chris’s families as well,” tweeted Mike Hardy.
