Newark Woman Convicted Of Slashing Another Woman In Front Of 6-Year-Old
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A Newark woman was convicted Wednesday of slashing another woman with a box cutter in front of the victim's 6-year-old child.
At the conclusion of a trial before Essex County Judge Thomas Moore, a jury convicted Mellissa Wilson, 35, of brutally attacking and slashing the woman. Wilson was convicted on all counts – including aggravated assault, weapons charges, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Wilson is related to the wife of a man who had allowed the victim to stay in an apartment in his multi-family home. The wife wanted the woman out of the house, and prosecutors said she recruited Wilson to attack the woman.
"This was a horrific case of a woman, who needed a place to stay temporarily with her young son, being ambushed by another woman in a fight over a man,'' Assistant Prosecutor Marlyen Habib said in a news release.
Wilson is set for sentencing on Feb. 1 of next year. She faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
